A huge disadvantage of hunting for deals and bargains on products that you'd like to purchase is ending up with reams of junk mail, and on others mailing lists. Throughout the course of a week, you may end up with dozens of phone calls and catalogs in the mail, all of which you have zero interest in.
Junk mail, and catalogs laying on your coffee table can become an easy temptation and can cost you a lot of hard-earned money in the long haul. Say no to consumerism and take charge of all of the junk coming into your life.
Below is a list of resources and tactics that I still use to this day.
There are four key websites worth visiting when trying to minimize the amount of junk mail and telemarketer calls that you receive.
Do Not Call Registry
http://www.donotcall.gov/The Do-Not-Call Implementation Act of 2003 comes to the rescue when combating unwanted phone calls.
Visit http://www.donotcall.gov/ or call 1-888-382-1222 and ask to join the National Do Not Call Registry. After ninety days, solicitors are no longer allowed to call you unless you’ve opted in on the phone call in some way (Translation: businesses you already work with).
OptOutPrescreen
https://www.optoutprescreen.com/
Hosted by the credit agencies, this website allows you to opt out from credit card offers for five years. Under the Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act of 2003, the credit agencies must agree to let people opt out of mailings produced exclusively by your credit score.
Signing up via the world wide web lasts five years - mailing your form makes the opt out permanent.
DirectMail.com Mail Preference Registry
https://www.directmail.com/directory/mail_preference/DirectMail.com’s Mail Preference Registry easily enables you to drop off the mailing list of direct mailers of all types, like catalogs and cardboard flyers that let tell you about “sales” at your local stores. This is implemented by a large association of direct mailers, who would rather not waste their money mailing marketing material to people who ignore it.
Three supplementary Steps
Augmenting the four sites mentioned are three additional tasks you can do to minimize the telemarketing and junk mail that flows into your life.
Trash the unwanted mail in your house. Anything unsolicited that you receive, destroy it immediately. That way, an offer sitting around won't encourage you to reach into your pockets and spend money. Just destroy it instantly (or see tip three below).
Request removal from specific call lists and solicitations. If you’ve opted in for a mailing sometime in the past but now want it to stop, call the telephone number on the catalog or mailing and ask for your removal from their mailing list. Removal may take some time but persistence pays off. One magazine took me three months and three requests to finally get them to comply.
Utilize junk mail to your advantage. Use the junk mail for something else. Shred it, add some paraffin, and make firestarters which can be used for camping. You can also use envelopes for your own mailing purposes.
Junk mail and marketing calls monopolize your precious time, waste Earths resources, and encourages you to make poor financial decisions. Why not stop this before things get out of hand with only a few minutes of your time right now?
