The human mind is complex, and can trick us. It can even be our enemy as people with mental illnesses can attest to. Our minds can tell us that things are wrong when they are right, and visa -versa.
One example of this can be thinking we are in love with someone of the opposite sex when we are not. Recognizing these traps that your mind tends to lead you into is mandatory to finding true, lifelong happiness.
List of self-deceptions:
I would be happier if I didn't have so much to do. - The human mind tends to trick us into thinking that we'd find fulfillment if we just didn't have to work for a living. We fantasize about a life of leisure, and mislead ourselves into thinking this type of lifestyle would make us happy. The awful truth is that doing nothing, (aka idleness) always leads to depression, and boredom.
As members of the human race, we are creative and industrious creatures. Humans need accomplishment, and challenges to be happy. Often times our minds lead us into believing we are miserable due to our parents, spouse, or someone else in our lives. We hand out blame like we're handing out candy. More often than not, we are as much to blame for our troubles as anyone else. We must accept responsibility for our lives, and do our best to make the best of it.Taking responsibility for our choices is the catalyst for true happiness.
I need to discover the secret to being successful if I am to be happy - Trust me, there are no "secrets" to finding success or happiness. As much as television, books, and self-help guru's would have us believing that shortcuts exist, they don't. Living successfully is simple, you create your vision, plan out your strategy, and then work toward your goals until you achieve them. There are no secrets or shortcuts to heaven, or happiness.
If only I had - We deceive ourselves if we believe that when we get the perfect job, right home or car, we will be happy. Desire for a better lifestyle in and of itself is not wrong, but what is wrong is believing that material things will make us happy. The high it creates is only temporary and eventually wears off. Those looking for real and lasting happiness must acknowledge that this is a hole that can never be filled.
I never want to change, and am am happy with things as they are - Believing this lie is only setting yourself up for failure. Life is dynamic, fluid, and constantly changing, and resisting change is a recipe for disaster. It will drain you of all of your energy, and peace of mind. Your ability to adapt to life's changes is paramount to your success.
My ship will never come in - We often get disillusioned and discouraged when success is just out of arms length. Colonel Sanders started his restaurant chain we he was 65 years old some 40 years after he started selling his chicken from his gas station. The key to success is perseverance. Never give up on your goals and dreams, because you may be one day, and one decision away from gaining that success.
I won't do things that I don't enjoy - Difficult tasks are what we as humans have a natural aversion to. Many times it is these "difficult tasks" that will result in our greatest achievements. Attack these difficult tasks head-on and you will gain a deep sense of gratification and happiness.
The world is frightening and something bad might happen - There are many things beyond our control. The media will have you believe that terror, and catastrophe are lurking outside of your door. The fact is that the crime rate has gone down in recent years. Violent crime is lower now than it was two decades ago. (FBI Statistics) Let the facts guide you and not your fears and break the bonds of the spin doctors in the media.
Dreams only come true for the people that are lucky - Our minds will often times trick us into thinking we are victims of chance, and that nothing good will ever happen to us.
What we think is luck in other people, is for the most part the result of years of trial, and error, preparation, and elbow grease. If you pursue your dreams you might be surprised at just how lucky you really can get out there in the world.
I could never do it - Our brains are marvelously deceptive at tricking us into thinking we can't do something. As humans, we are full of great potential, and although our circumstances might deliver a degree of difficulty, it is nothing that a little ingenuity, and perseverance can't overcome. You now have the power to overcome these self-lies because you can see them for what they are worth....Nothing.
Plan something tonight enjoy your new found happiness!
